This role was both a legal role and a sales role. It’s a legal role in that it involved me having an intricate understanding of the complex law in relation to wills and probate, whilst carefully taking wishes and giving sound legal advice. It was a sales role in that the main objective was to effectively sell probate services to these customers, bearing in mind the sensitive nature of the sale. The role was an entirely client facing role.

Having been handpicked by Lloyds senior management to be transferred into this department, I managed relationships with client accounts and sold to them. The role was primarily B2C. The role involved managing and selling to multiple client accounts which had received large PPI payment from Lloyds. My role was to negotiate with the client to ensure the money was invested in opportunities back where it came from, and sell the opportunities available to the client with the bank. Opportunities included but were not limited to clearing debt, encouraging the long term benefits of ongoing relations with the bank and potentially renegotiating contractual terms. I kept first class relations with clients so as not to lose business opportunity and sold to them generating revenue for the bank.

Having been recommended by the marketing department at the end of my industrial placement year (above), the work in the Virgin Atlantic legal department was varied. Researching legal implications of Virgin Atlantic’s planned marketing and aeronautical endeavours were highly important to the role, as well as being meticulous with a high attention to detail when reading over big business contracts. Presentation skills were vital as after each task assigned I was required to report back on research.

    • Relationship Manager
      • Jul 2007 - Jul 2008

At Virgin, I was in the credit card marketing team. The role combined financial services with marketing and relationship management. In the role, I would manage and co-ordinate a range of relationships - from the creative design agency called Gyro, with whom we would meet with regularly to discuss creative, design and other marketing activity; as well as coordinating relationships with the partners of the credit card - American Express and MBNA. There were big promotional campaigns often launched and the Virgin UK credit card marketing team was very small, meaning on occasions I would solely manage the Virgin Atlantic Credit Card retention programme with over 36,000 retained customers. Organisational skills and effective time management were vital whilst managing monthly inserts being sent out to tens of thousands of people every month.
