The Public Defender, Criminal Division, is charged with representing indigent criminal defendants throughout Oneida County and on appeal to the Appellate Division, Fourth Department and the New York State Court of Appeals. This authority extends to the 42 city, town and village courts within the county, Oneida County Court and parole violations and appeals. This jurisdiction also includes the defense of inmates accused of committing criminal offenses while incarcerated in one of the three state corrections facilities within Oneida County and the Central New York Psychiatric Center. In 2016, the Public Defender, Criminal Division, was awarded a grant by the NYS Office of Indigent Legal Services to open one of six New York State Regional Immigration Assistance Centers (RIAC) to offer immigration advice to attorneys serving an indigent population of noncitizen clients in Criminal and Family courts.

As an attorney with the RIAC office, we provided training, technical assistance and other legal support to 16 counties located throughout the Central New York region to attorneys representing indigent immigrants in criminal and family courts. We also provided training to judges in the Fifth and Sixth Judicial Districts along with invitations to train at several state-wide judges’ annual conferences.
