I received my Doctorate in History at the University of Waterloo in December 2020. My research explored the effects of the First World War in Kenya. My dissertation described the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Kenyan government, and settler society in commemorating the First World War, especially the differences between commemoration for settlers in the colony, on the one hand, and Black Kenyans, on the other. My research was made possible by generous funding from the University of Waterloo, alongside fellowships from the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). As part of my professional development at the University of Waterloo, I performed essential support tasks for Course Instructors including student assessment, tutorial design and delivery, guest lectures, and student interactions. In collaboration with Dr. Whitney Lackenbauer at the University of Waterloo - St. Jerome's, I helped prepare a grant application for a project concerning Indigenous participation in the Canadian Expeditionary Forced during the First World War. I transcribed hundreds of letters addressed to the Department of Indian Affairs between 1914-1919, and collated the transcribed letters into a volume intended for use by senior undergraduate and undergraduate students for research projects. The volume, alongside a second volume treating the Second World War, is currently under review for publication. Show less

In partnership with the University of Tsukuba, Japan, I designed and delivered a 3-day intensive course on project design, academic writing in English, and research methods for Masters Students in a unique program that offered training for students from India, Nepal, Mongolia, and Ghana. The course traced the steps for successful research design, proposal writing, and project execution in most students' second language of instruction. I followed-up with students on their proposals, awarding students with a certificate (SUSTEP) in academic writing in English. Show less

    • Research Assistant
      • Nov 2016 - Dec 2016

I performed a literature review and provided advice for a major research grant, eventually culminating in the language revitalization and cultural history project "Songs in the Key of Cree." I compiled a comprehensive review of academic, not-for-profit, and activist literature concerning a range of topics germane to Indigenous relations with the Canadian state. Specifically, I analyzed issues of land cession, youth suicide, the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) crisis, and language revitalization. Show less
