I serve at the pleasure of a 14 person volunteer board of directors and am responsible for the overall operation of Garten, a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1970. Staffed by 300 employees, Garten’s operations stretch from Portland to Roseburg and include 3 facilities in Salem, as well as sites in Eugene and Dallas, Oregon. Garten depends on social service funding for only 10% of its approximate $15 million operating budget. Garten provides training and employment to over 500 people with disabilities through partnerships with numerous local businesses. Businesses operated by Garten to provide job opportunities include: Custodial, Landscaping, Industrial Packaging & Assembly, Commercial Laundry, Mail Services, Document Destruction and Recycling. The large recycling business includes electronics recycling and EBay sales of refurbished electronics.

In order to eliminate duplication and better serve our community, I helped merge 2 formerly competing non-profits to form the new corporation: Cornerstone Associates. We formed the new board with 8 members from each organization's former board and I was hired as the CEO of the new corporation. It was my responsibility to manage the business and blend the cultures and policies to better achieve our mission to provide employment opportunities for individuals with significant disabilities. We operated 8 entrepreneurial businesses and a community placement division to create community jobs for people with and without disabilities.
