I spent my time inputting the years of data collected by a collaborative nonprofit that operated under grants from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, United Way, and the Van Beuren foundation and others. In my time digitally copying binders of data, I also spent my time knocking on doors in the communities the nonprofit saw it’s most work. Those being the North End and surrounding communities of Rhode Island that are largely the more impoverished areas in one of the northeast’s richest cities. My work talking to the residents provided survey data at an important halfway point in the collaborative’s 10 year lifespan. I was also in charge of note taking and transcription during board meetings, even asked to record, edit and send out zoom meetings for the team to review and have on file. Show less

Newport, Rhode Island, United States The Student Ambassador position at Salve Regina is one of the best examples of a learning experience disguised as a good time. During the summer in Newport, the student ambassador position is focused on taking prospective students on tours, showing them what their intended major would look like, all while 'selling' the university to them. Aside from representing the best of the Office and the University, the Ambassador job requires one to have and learn a good grasp of office skills. From photocopying things for your supervisors, running supplies, doing inventory, restocking essential material, setting up and breaking down flags, signs and tables; we do these things while we learn to expand our network and networking skills.

You were required to attend bi-weekly meetings with your respective staff as well as bi-weekly 'one-on-one' meetings with your supervisor. Also on the agenda were 8 programs per semester that, either passive(2) or physical(6) were aimed at creating an inclusive community while education residents on the policies regarding mental health, drugs and alcohol, fire safety, and of course, how to have fun with the people you live with. Aside from that, you were also trained twice a year on Title IX policy, fire safety, mental health check-ins/safety, and also asked to create 4-5 bulletin boards that reflected these trainings. The job was really a 24/7 commitment, as any issue that arose with one's residents, and sometimes residents that weren't even your own, would be placed under your jurisdiction as well. You represented the organization while you were at school, at home, or even asleep.
