Environmental Scientist-Water Sampler and Waiver Coordinator
-
Apr 2017 - Present
My role is to collect drinking water compliance samples for southeast New Mexico and to complete sampling waiver applications state-wide to reduce sampling costs. For my sampling role I follow EPA sampling protocols to ensure quality samples are delivered to the lab for analysis. For my waiver coordinator role I review source water assessments, GIS data, and previous lab results to ensure water systems are eligible to receive sampling waivers. After a waiver receives the final approval from the Bureau Chief, I enter the new sampling schedules into the SDWIS database -Collected 100% of compliance samples in my area with no missed samples. -Wrote waivers to save the state an average of ~$250,000 in sampling costs every year. -Experience reviewing chemistry data -Experience with the SDWIS database Show less

Research Assistant
-
Jun 2013 - Apr 2017
I started this role as an undergraduate research assistant to help a research team test brand new chemical instrumentation, specifically ion mobility spectrometers, that were designed and built in-house. As an undergraduate, I prepared samples to create response curves to test the limits of detection and linear response ranges for these instruments. This work required me to perform duties in data collection and data processing. I continued with this work as a graduate student where I helped design and build brand new instrument designs to be used for airport screenings, military applications, and pesticide detection. This role required me to prepare weekly presentations to present to the research team as well as aid in monthly reports that were presented to our sponsors. In addition to the work listed above, I also performed duties for my graduate thesis that were not a part of my paid work. My thesis work involved studying the influence of moisture on the quantitative response in Ion Mobility Spectrometry. I built my own Ion Mobility Spectrometer from scratch to perform this research. This research required me to study the equilibrium reactions between gas phase water molecules and a protonated compound and how the equilibrium shifted as the moisture level was increased.-Independently lead a research project -Worked with a university research team that received over $1 million per year in research grants.-Mentored undergraduate students in the lab while working as a Graduate Research Assistant.-Extensive experience with instrument design and construction Show less
