    • Retail Sales Manager (Circulation)
      • Jun 2010 - Apr 2013

The retail (circulation) team in NSW is responsible for the distribution and increasing sales of The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, The Australian and Sportsman through all retail channels including independent retail outlets (newsagents), the organised trade (Woolworths, Coles, Coles Express, IGA etc) and alternative channels (e.g. McDonalds, Fitness First). The publications sold in excess of 500,000 copies on a daily basis with combined turnover of $100m+. Transformed the existing culture from customer service/compliance checking to a sales culture by introducing specific newspaper sales targets, a reinvigorated call cycle and call structure, a monthly new business focus, and regular sales/negotiation training amongst other things. The monthly promotional focus resulted in numerous successes such as 20,000 additional paper sales on Melbourne Cup day in pubs/clubs, 15,000 paper sales at polling booths for the state and Federal elections, 10,000 sales in florists on Mother’s Day doubling existing yield per copy. Reinvigorated the existing Newspartners loyalty program increasing participation from 100 newsagents to 250 newsagents. This was achieved by introducing regular in-store promotions for these newsagents, re-adjusting the team’s existing sales call cycle, completing a Retail roadshow to demonstrate market trends and areas for agents to focus on growing their business and providing impactful point-of-sale not available to the entire market. These agents outperformed the rest of the market on average by five percentage points. Restructured the sales team to provide a more detailed focus on key accounts resulting in a number of successful promotions; for example, the Woolworths Everyday Rewards promotion increased sales of The Sunday Telegraph by 65,000 (12%) in a single day. • Online Business Manager
      • Nov 2008 - Jun 2010

Reporting to the Managing Director this role was responsible for the content, product development and P&L for The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph websites (www.thetelegraph.com.au). In 12 months turned the site from a loss making business into a profitable business exceeding budget expectations. This was achieved by creating a specific content plan focussing on our core pillars of news, sport and entertainment which re-directed traffic on our site to more profitable areas. This increased our sell-thru rates and increased yield via revised packaging and helped develop new products for the sales team to sell. Grew traffic and time on site by 50%+ on a monthly basis through management of third party referrals, timely updates on content, linking stories and effective marketing. This exceeded budgeted expectations. Increased players in NRL Supercoach (a fantasy football game) from 50,000 to over 100,000 and launched the first i-Phone apps for NRL Supercoach followed by another for League Central (a dedicated rugby league app). Introduced a social media strategy to increase third party referrals and create a deeper relationship with our brand, including the launch of a Facebook page with more than 30,000 fans in just over 4 months and similarly on Twitter. • Classifieds Manager
      • Apr 2005 - Nov 2008

Managed a department of 30 people, including 6 direct reports and classified advertising revenue in excess of $60 million predominantly across Real Estate, Careers and Automotive. Responsible for a $2 million marketing budget designed to attract private party advertising. Working in conjunction with our advertising agency (Optimedia) this budget was used across all forms of media both above and below the line. Through a more strategic approach we decreased our cost per acquisition by 20% and increased our volume and revenue by 5%. Spearheaded the launch of two new sections (Weekend Shopper and CarsGuide Shopper) targeting private party advertising and creating new revenue streams. These sections secured an additional $1m in revenue in their first year. Set the strategic direction for our contact centre and restructured the department to provide the contact centre with more administrative responsibilities allowing the sales team more time in the field. This resulted in a 3% YOY increase in revenue in a rapidly declining print advertising category. Re-designed and re-launched all major sections including CarsGuide, CareerOne, Real Estate and Homes Magazine. Show less
