My primary consulting expertise is in the use of numerical modelling to solve industrial problems. Initially, this was in the field of conveyor belt transfer chutes, however more recently has expanded into more unique and challenging areas such as quaking bins, feeders, vibrating screens and the modelling of particle breakage. Since joining TUNRA Bulk Solids in 2007, I have been involved in over 170 industrial projects, including both the conceptual design stage as well as trouble shooting existing designs, in Australia and Internationally, and involving a wide range of products. Typically, these projects require the use of both a traditional continuum mechanics approach and as well as the Discrete Element Method (DEM). These projects have covered many industries, with the main ones being coal and iron ore. My current research interests have been in the area of transfer chutes, specifically in the area of passive dust control techniques and calibration of parameters for Discrete Element Modelling (DEM). The research on dust control has involved the use of both Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and DEM and has on focussed on reducing dust generation in transfer chutes through passive means (no external energy sources). The research on the calibration of DEM parameters is ongoing and is vital in the successful application of this modelling technique to solve industrial problems. My research focus throughout postgraduate research was on the topic of permeability of packed beds and included developing and writing my own packing algorithms to simulate packed beds of spheres as well as fibrous materials. This modelling background served as an excellent platform to move into the field of DEM and CFD.
