Producer: Investigating Sustainable Forestry
-
Sep 2022 - Present
The BC Forest Discovery Centre has received funding from Digital Museums Canada (DMC) to create an online exhibit that explores the development of sustainable forestry practices on Vancouver Island from before colonization and up to the present day. The aim is to encourage an appreciation and understanding of how long-term sustainable forest management requires a decision-making process that involves Indigenous and local communities in balancing the many interconnecting economic, social, and environmental values. Using the forest industry as a backdrop, the exhibit will also visit the historical and contemporary lives of forestry people featuring stories and photos that reveal the diversity of the Indigenous, and immigrant experience. The online exhibit will tell its story principally through short videos and a series of interactive games. The exhibit will align with BC curricular competencies in grades 4, 5 and 6 and later in grades 11 and 12. It will also be of interest to informal learners from the wider community that are interested in sustainable forestry and environmental protection, as well as people whose ancestors worked in forestry in BC.
