  I am currently a volunteer for Southampton young carers. During my time at young carers I have developed skills that have enabled me to talk with young people (8yrs-11yrs) in a group setting, and also with a specific young person in a 'one to one' setting, about personal issues such as their home life and the stresses that being a young carer can put on them. It has made me realize that this group benefit from talking to someone who shares experiences that they themselves have been through. From my role as a carer at home I have been able to harness abilities and bring my personal knowledge of my caring role to this group who are sensitive to this topic, and in doing so have (in my one to one sessions) been able to talk more deeply about subjects in which these young carers do not wish to talk about with the other volunteers. Also during my time at young carers I have been privileged enough to see the transformation of my 'one to one' young carer, in the form of positive feedback from all staff that also work with her. All having commented on the positive changes that she has gone through since the start of our sessions. As a volunteer I take part in fortnightly evening sessions with 8-11 year olds, monthly sessions with 11-16 year olds which are held at the SVS centre. I have also been fortunate enough to accompany the young people on the project on day trips and have participated in organization of these events.
