Ryan Mewis

I supervised Tom for his PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). His research was focused on applying the hyperpolarisation technique SABRE to polarising a range of biologically relevant molecules. He looked at the use of different metals for the SABRE catalyst and at scavenger strategies for removing the catalyst from solution. Five papers were published from this research. These are listed on his LinkedIn profile. Tom was very independent in terms of organising and managing his PhD. He was able to acquire a full range of 2D NMR data, using cryogenic cooling as appropriate, and then use that data to understand the processes taking place. For his work, EXSY was very important along with the subsequent generation of Eyring-Polanyi plots. He supplemented his NMR knowledge by employing a variety of other methods such as EDX and ICP. This approach was purely Tom’s decision, born out largely through his desire to gain a deeper level of understanding with respect to the processes occurring. Tom has assisted as a laboratory demonstrator for all levels of MMU’s undergraduate courses. He was not only a diligent and patient demonstrator in terms of ensuring student safety and aiding their understanding, but he was also keen to ensure their learning experience is maximised by priding himself on being knowledgeable about all the instrumentation being used. He demonstrates the same professionalism when mentoring and supervising BSc and MChem students through their projects. He is certainly someone I could depend upon completely to complete a task to a high standard and with significant rigour. On a personal level, Tom has been a pleasure to work with and supervise. As my first ever PhD student, I genuinely could not have asked for anyone as hardworking, diligent and as clearly capable with respect to researching as Tom. I am very much indebted to him for all his work.

During my undergraduate and masters research projects Tom was senior to me as a PHD student in the Mewis group. Tom is a very hardworking individual who is always willing to help others. He assisted me and my colleagues immensely in our work with both academic and practical knowledge applying his wealth of experience. He is a good teacher and a good speaker having done an engaging presentation for the chemistry society I ran at the university, highlighting his ability to communicate well on different levels. Tom is a person who is always striving to do more than just the assigned role which I think shows a level of determination and commitment that should be commended. I wish him all the luck in his future endeavours and would be happy to work together again sometime.
