Thomas spent a year working at Astute Wealth Management on a 12 month industrial placement as part of his University course. During this time Tom became a central member of the Astute team through a combination of his enthusiasm for the role and his engaging personality. He took every opportunity that the placement presented and tackled a variety of different challenges with gusto, most notably the chance to take on further study and start his progression through the Diploma in Financial Planning. He discovered a keen interest in investment practise and during his time at Astute constructed diversified investment portfolios using the analysis of investment ratios. Whilst Tom worked at Astute we were undertaking a review of our central investment proposition and I relied upon Tom to collate the necessary research, he also engaged with a number of investment partners to help whittle down those that were being considered. We undertake a monthly newsletter and Tom took ownership of this process so that I could rest assured this was being managed by a member of the team, he also because our resident 'back office system' expert by working with Plum software to understand how we could better integrate the system into our working practises. Beyond these wider responsibilities Tom undertook all of the relevant tasks of a general paraplanner. He is keen to learn and will always ask pertinent questions, he is also a fantastic personality to have as part of any team. I would be delighted if Tom would come back to us one day but I'm sure he's got a long way to go in any financial services organisation.

Thomas is very analytical with investment research and takes an active interest in worldwide economics whilst understanding the fundamentals of investment research. He will ask questions to gain a broad understanding and doesn't shy away from challenging the status quo if he feels there is better outcome to be had. I enjoyed working with Tom over the last 12 months and he has done well on placement and I wish him all the best for the future.

Industrial 12 Month Placement - Paraplanner
-
Aug 2015 - Sep 2016
Last year I undertook a year’s placement as a Paraplanner at a leading Chartered Wealth Management Firm in Lancashire. Whilst on placement I sat and passed R02 & R05.I thoroughly enjoyed working in this industry as I discovered that I have a real passion and enthusiasm for personal finance. This year of experience in the finance industry confirmed to me that I must pursue a career as a Paraplanner with the eventual goal of becoming a Chartered Financial Planner. I worked in this role all in all for 14 months, in which I gained a vast amount of industry specific knowledge. The tasks I carried out whilst on my placement included;• I have strong knowledge of investment performance ratio’s, and can confidently construct client portfolios using a specific mandate whilst using Alpha, Sharpe, Volatility and Treynor ratios to determine which Investment funds to implement. • I was tasked with creating an income portfolio for a client with a medium risk profile, that produced a natural yield of 3.5% (to be paid to a beneficiary of a trust) and which had to be under 0.80% AMC.• I have constructed portfolios worth circa £8 million. • I have strong knowledge of FE Analytics • I led the rebalancing of portfolio’s once a quarter• I was tasked with the due diligence for the new investment proposal. This involved reviewing the whole market and narrowing down the search using set parameters. I created a panel of providers, and then scheduled meetings with investment companies/DFM providers. I attended the meetings and took notes which I then presented in a report to the investment committee.• Writing courtesy letters to clients• Suitability report writing• Investment reviews• Establishing a client’s risk profile• Creating full holistic financial plans (Using Truth software, some knowledge of Voyance)• Updating CRM (Plum Software) I also streamlined the process in which we reported valuations to clients using the provider link function
