I met Thomas Class when I interviewed for a job at PTRL Europe. In that moment I realized that he was very experienced and could teach me a lot. As the founder of his own company and as my supervisor, Thomas was very goal oriented, demanding and very creative in problem solving. I was always fascinated that he was involved in countless projects more than the study directors, whom officially managed these studies. I am very grateful to him for providing me with a very professional career start.

Started as a 3-headcount CRO at a Science Park in Ulm, Germany in 1992, PTRL Europe grew to one of the most recognized analytical chemistry labs, foccusing mainly on many aspects needed for the registration of plant protection products (pesticides). The reputation of PTRL Europe and its partner laboratory PTRL West in California lead in 2012 into their merger and aquisition by EAG Inc., a US-based research and service orientated company.PTRL Europe's quality "Science and Service" approach was well recognized withing the major global agro-chemical industry players. The areas of activity (always based on profond knowledge and a wide expertice in analytical chemistry) were mainly residue and environmental analysis, e-fate and metabolism (including 14C-radiotracer studies), product chemistry and physical-chemical properties, and supporting analyses for eco-tox and tox studies. PTRL Europe was well-known for their pragmatic approaches solving challenging analytical problems such as analyses of small, volatile compounds (e.g. soil fumigants by HS-GC/MS/MS) or small, polar metabolites (e.g. the triazole metabolites by LC-DMS/MS/MS), of chiral active substances or metabolites (such as pyrethroids by chiral NP- or RP-HPLC-UV and -MS/MS), and of very polar analytes such as glyphosate or phosphonic acid/salts by LC/MS/MS.

As a C2 professor at the University of Ulm working on an habilitation thesis the research areas involved pesticide, environmental and analytical chemistry, foccusing on the chiral chromatography and environmental behaviour of the class of pyrethroid insecticides. The chromatographic techniques used were chiral capillary GC on cyclodextrine-based stationary phase, chiral HPLC using normal-phase cyclodextrine phases as well as Pirkle-type reversed phase columns. Additional activities were a collaboration within a project developping earlyknowledge-based and decision-making expert system for environmental water contamination.

As a 2-year post-doc and researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, in Professor John Casida's well-known PCTL (now ECTL) institute, research focused on pesticide chemistry of pyrethroid insecticides and other types of pesticides. Metabolism was studied in vivo and in vitro for S-bioallethrin, photolysis for ethofenprox and related non-ester pyrethroids, and other insecticides, using capillary GC/ECD, GC/MS and 2D-NMR techniques to elucidate previously unknown metabolites and photoproducts.
