Proativo, inteligente, comprometido, detalhista, organizado e responsável. São estas as principais características que posso levantar do Thiago, as quais pude vivenciar de perto por meio de trabalhos acadêmicos e da própria convivência que tivemos durante a graduação.

Lilian Campos Bernardes

Thiago has attended courses I have taught from the UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) Pharmacy Post-Graduation course and, during the time we spent together, he had an outstanding ability to absorb new concepts, as well as the skills and competencies to solve problems and propose new ideas. He holds diversified knowledge in the field of pharmaceuticals and drugs, making him an unique professional, with critical and sensible vision, and able to face new challenges. Furthermore, he presents initiative, being dynamic and works really well in groups. He is a very easy-going person, with people’s skills, ethical and honest.

SCIENTIFIC INITIATION: research on the antiviral compounds, cytotoxic, central nervous system depressant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and with activity in the cardiovascular system. Chemical and pharmacological studies aiming at obtaining herbal medicine. The results of many of these studies may have their application in the pharmaceutical industry, by developing new drugs or enhancing product quality already existing in the market. MASTERS: standardization of the Franz diffusion cell for permeability studies of drugs and excipients through buccal and esophageal mucosae, just as pig ear skin. This innovative project may take to the introduction of pharmaceutical mucoadhesive preparations to the Brazilian market. The usage of a buccal mucosa for the drug administration, targeting local action, is recent. Up until now, there is only a mucoadhesive in the global market approved by FDA: the Aftach® (used for aphthous stomatitis). This study had a multidisciplinary and challenging profile, involving areas such as Pharmaceutical Technology, Quality Control and Analytical Chemistry. DOCTORATE: Approach development from pharmaceutical technology aiming at improving biopharmaceutical characteristics from saquinavir mesylate, an anti-retroviral used in AIDS treatment. This study aimed at reducing production costs of this drug as well as the improvement of intestinal absorption from the active compound of this product. If this hypothesis is confirmed, several advantages would be observed: greater adherence to treatment, lower production costs, reduction of undesirable side-effects, among others. Show less

Ex vivo buccal permeability studies for different drugs (diffusion model used: Ussing chambers / membrane model: porcine buccal epithelium). Different chemical absorption enhancers were considered in order to improve the buccal permeability of these drugs; including mechanistic studies. Planning, execution and results analysis from the following experiments: - In vitro evaluation of the genotoxic potential of nanovectors by the Comet assay; - Release studies of fluorescent dyes from nanovectors with different physicochemical properties, using cellulose acetate membranes and Franz diffusion apparatus as model; - Ex vivo permeation of these same materials in the pig ear skin through the Franz diffusion cell model and quantification by fluorimetry; - Histological analysis of the skin after treatment with dye-containing nanovectors in order to verify the penetration degree in skin layers (epidermis and dermis); - Determination of the drug encapsulation efficiency by the ultracentrifugation technique. - Development of a sensitive fluorescence-based assay for the quantitative determination of fluorescent dyes. Assisting projects regarding Fito Network Restructuring. Developed tasks: bibliographical survey from plants which are part of the Medicinal Plants National List (list of regional plants representing the regional popular phytotherapy) of interest for the SUS (Brazilian National Health Care System), and critical analysis from the consulted scientific literature for elaborating monographies. This research will contribute for the identification of new research needs, draw up a National Formulary of Medicinal Plants, as well as serving as support to the National Policy on Phytopharmaceuticals and Medicinal Plants. These policies advocate the inclusion of the use of medicinal plants in primary health care, which shall be employed with highest efficacy and safety and must be object of the actions of Pharmaceutical Services, which are also to be applied to manufactured drugs.
