Name: Tessa Reading Project: International Correspondent - Queen Mary, University of London Term: Fall 2017 I had the opportunity to oversee Tessa’s contributions as an International Correspondent for the Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University in collaboration with Queen Mary, University of London. While she was studying abroad for a semester in London, Tessa completed a number of projects and assignments which documented her experience and that of other students around her with a special focus on diversity topics. In addition to adjusting to cultural differences and a unique academic system, juggling a full course load at a foreign university is no small feat. On top of these responsibilities, Tessa did well in her responsibilities as an international correspondent. Tessa is a solid writer. Her work was always well-crafted, requiring limited revisions (if any), and she clearly put the time and effort into creating insightful resources. This made it easy to publish her work. Tessa was charged with uncovering the diversity of people and experiences around her and telling those stories. Her work represented the unique, untold stories of those often marginalized in study abroad participation. I was impressed by her ability to leverage her network to meet the challenge at hand and with the range of topics she covered throughout her time abroad, such as identity, religion, and immersive study abroad. She was able to connect with people on a deep and personal level, earning their trust and their permission to tell their stories. Tessa is also dependable, both in her high standard of quality and excellence and in completing her work on time. In addition to writing and storytelling, she submitted photography that improved with each batch of photos. When she was asked to provide feedback on her experience as an international correspondent, she was precise and self aware, noting how she believes it has impacted her and her future goals. In short, she was a pleasure to work with, and I have no doubt she will be successful in her future professional endeavors. Sincerely, Michelle Mannweiler Assistant Director of Student Services Work-to-Study Grant Program Coordinator Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University mmannwei@ifsa-butler.org

Working independently, I developed lesson plans for eleventh and twelfth-grade students that complied with MA state standards and ELA frameworks. I delivered lessons for in-person and remote students simultaneously through video conferencing in an engaging fashion. Incorporating short and long-term writing and writing lessons into my curriculum, I strengthened student skills and college readiness. I also managed student engagement and social-emotional well-being through weekly check-ins.
