My research involves metabolomics analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), using mass spectrometry. The aim is to identify new biomarkers for improving diagnosis and understanding of neurometabolic disorders. My tasks include preparation and LC-MS analysis of CSF samples, analysis and interpretation of metabolomics data and communication of results through publications and presentations.

Using Next Generation Metabolic Screening (NGMS, as described in Coene et al., J Inherit Metab Dis, 2018), I analysed LC/MS data of plasma/saliva from patients with (inborn) errors of metabolism to confirm their diagnosis and to identify new biomarkers that will help improve future diagnoses.

I developed and taught educational programmes with regard to research on iron metabolism, for Bachelor's students of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Furthermore, I was responsible for managing the Iron Biobank, a collection of data and biospecimens of patients with an iron metabolism disorder.

During this internship, I focused on finding the molecular cause of unexplained inherited iron disorders. This involved confirming the pathogenicity of mutations found from whole exome sequencing by functional testing, and measuring TMPRSS6 expression (by qRT-PCR) in patient's cells to explain the IRIDA* phenotype of heterozygotes. Moreover, I was involved in setting up and implementing the Iron Biobank at the Radboudumc, to facilitate further research on iron disorders.*IRIDA = Iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia.
