Juno is an intersectional feminist organisation based in Melbourne's northern suburbs that works with women and non-binary folk who have experienced homelessness and family violence. EMPower (Economic Mobility Power) is a holistic coaching program developed by Juno, based closely on a highly successful model created by Boston-based organisation, EMPath in conjunction with Harvard University. The approach is informed by neuroscience and an understanding of how poverty, trauma and toxic stress affect brain functioning. Adopting a coaching approach can help to rebuild executive functioning skills and a growth mindset, and support clients to create economically secure and thriving futures. EMPower works in partnership with clients who have experienced homelessness to set and reach goals across life domains including family, housing, health and wellbeing, finances, career and employment. This program brings together an intersectional feminist understanding of structural barriers many women face, alongside a deep belief in change, healing and the immense power people have to reshape their lives. • Case Manager in the Women's House
      • May 2018 - Dec 2020

My role as a caseworker centered upon working with women from a trauma-informed, feminist-oriented, strengths-based approach. The focus within case management is upon securing affordable and sustainable housing for women in need. To ensure a holistic approach, we also work on goals and needs pertaining to health & wellbeing, independence, social participation and economic participation. The second core aspect of the Women’s House is providing a safe space for women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness within the daytime drop-in space. There is true diversity amongst the women who come to the house, including women involved in sex work, from CALD backgrounds, domestic violence survivors, transwomen, Aboriginal women, and refugees. Building rapport, facilitating discussion, and ensuring all women feel safe and heard is paramount in this role. Show less

      • Aug 2016 - Dec 2016

The Gender Centre is Australia's only support service specifically focused on supporting transgender people experiencing homelessness, through housing support, casework, counselling, support groups and education. During my placement at The Gender Centre, I was one of the main organisers for the 2016 Transgender Day of Remembrance event, which included a Living Library, major outdoor film screening of The Trans List, a presentation by Australian Human Rights Commissioner, Edward Santow, and a candlelight vigil in the evening. I worked in partnership with the NSW Police Force LGBTQI Policy Officer, City of Sydney LGBTQI Community Programs Officer, and representatives from Queer Screen and Trans Sydney Pride to co-ordinate this event. My other roles during my placement included casework sessions, research, resource development, and giving presentations at the University of Sydney. Show less
