Research Assistant
-
Sep 2018 - Jul 2019
• Industrial placement year at Cardiff University, where I worked as a research assistant to PhD student Kath Whittey, under the supervision of Dr Sarah Perkins and as part of the CRIPES lab group. • Assisted with remote and field-based data collection, identifying species and monitoring fish behaviour on a threatened coral reef in Tobago. • Carried out a research project and achieved a first class mark for the scientific report I produced over the course of the year, also achieving a first for an oral examination (viva), demonstrating my ability to effectively communicate complex ideas. • 2 weeks of fieldwork at the study site in Tobago, collecting data to contribute to the long-term dataset and participating in conservation efforts by constructing artificial reef structures, which have now begun to aid reef recovery. • Attended weekly lab meetings and seminars which allowed me to develop my knowledge and gain confidence when contributing my own ideas. • Attended several conferences, including the Reef Conservation UK annual conference at the Zoological Society of London and WEEN at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, Wales, where I learnt vital networking and communication skills. • Mentioned in paper acknowledgements of "Microhabitats of sharknose goby (Elacatinus evelynae) cleaning stations and their links with cleaning behaviour" authored by Kath Whittey (see link)
