Educting ALL Project Lead
-
Jan 2017 - May 2019
Educating All seeks to tackle the barriers faced by working-class students within higher education. We have conducted research across a number of universities with a wide range of working class students, Educating All is now looking to work with individual university partners to create tailored solutions to improve the recruitment, retention, attainment and well-being of working class students. The project is uniquely student-led and focuses on the last two stages of the student life cycle – the basis of OFFA’s five-year strategic plan: Stage Four, student success and progress, and Stage Five, student progression beyond university into the labour market. Our approach seeks to foreground the voices of working class students. By empowering these voices and putting them at the heart of policy development, we can help universities to be truly inclusive and allow everyone, regardless of class, to thrive in an academic environment.

Researcher

2016 - Mar 2017
Carrying out research foregrounding the voice of young people in the debate around barriers faced at top universities in order to make recommendations to improve the retention, attainment and wellbeing of working-class students. Interviews were carried out with students and recent graduates from universities throughout the UK as well as members of staff and student officers, covering the university experience and measures that could have been put in place to better support working-class students. The report launching at the University of Manchester and London hosted by NEF with academics, students and policy makers has since influenced policy within the sector. The sessions demonstrated the value of diverse stakeholders collaborating to explore the issues and featured speakers from the sector included Sam Barrs, Director of Research at LKMco, Anne-Marie Canning, Director of Widening Participation at King's College London and Shelly Asquith, former Vice President of Welfare at the National Union of Students. The report also received notable media coverage such with features in The Times, Huffington post and other outlets.

My duties included researching current affairs in order to source and develop content for the programme. My experience coincided with the announcement of EU the referendum which allowed me to gain experience in a high pressured, deadline driven environment at a large and renowned organisation. I also had creative responsibilities such as editing using Adobe Premiere software and filming.
