Through this laboratory-based work experience, I conducted an independent research in a pharmacologically related environment. This included the understanding of regulations, procedures and ethics related to animal research. I have gained critical and reflective knowledge and understanding in a subject of choice, with both the ability and readiness to question its principles, practices and boundaries. This included the understanding of regulations, procedures and ethics related to animal research. I have gained critical and reflective knowledge and understanding in a subject of choice, with both the ability and readiness to question its principles, practices and boundaries. I proposed a novel, not previously researched topic at our university labs, the role of endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids in the mice uterus concerning a novel health product on the market - CBD-infused tampons. This gave me the chance to think independently, analytically and creatively, and engage imaginatively with new areas of investigation. I was then able to synthesise new and existing knowledge with my colleagues within a poster that we later on presented at the Annual British Pharmacological Society Conference 2019 in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. My main roles in this research placement included: ● Conduct scientific literature searches and critically evaluate original research papers, in order to be able to identify a research question and formulate the hypothesis, aims and objectives of a study to address it. ● Give appropriate consideration to ethical and health and safety issues. ● Conduct a laboratory-based scientific investigation over a minimum period of 6 weeks in a work-based learning environment, using appropriate methods, with a degree of independence and demonstrate proficiency in practical and technical skills appropriate to pharmacology. ● Analyse and interpret experimental observations, using statistical analyses where appropriate and critically evaluate study findings in the context of the available literature. This was a wonderful experience for me that helped me expand my enterprising spirit, not only giving me exceptional practical skills but also bringing innovation and productivity to my team and community.
