My work is focused on determining the mechanisms of genomic instability in repetitive coding regions and the effects of this variation on protein function. In my current project, I am utilizing genetic and biochemical techniques to investigate the effects of protein repeat variation on the prion-forming transcription factor Azf1p in budding yeast.

Under Dr. Gregory Ferguson, I utilized ellipsometric and electrochemical techniques to study the behavior of gold-oxide layers formed with oxygen plasma. I participated in weekly group meetings to discuss results and plan future experiments and wrote two formal research papers per semester. My research culminated in a short thesis presented to a general audience in May 2016.

Technology, Research, and Communications (TRAC) Writing Fellow
-
Apr 2013 - May 2016
As a TRAC fellow, I was assigned to a different course each semester in which I collaborated with the professor to develop the writing assignments. Throughout the semester, I commented on student drafts and conferenced with students to improve their writing and communication skills. Additionally, I attended monthly staff meetings and met weekly with a small group of other TRAC fellows to brainstorm improvements for the program.

Over the course of two summers, I conducted a study of materials that are used to wrap production equipment that is sterilized and wiped down as it is transported into production suites. Through experimentation, I evaluated the permeability of the wrapping materials to disinfectant and the risk associated with each piece of equipment. In order to promote sterility assurance, I collaborated with suppliers and the affected departments to develop and implement several alternative wrapping procedures. Show less
