Patent Scientist

Nov 2019 - Present
As a Patent Scientist at an Intellectual Property Law practice, I work closely with attorneys, patent agents, and staff to prepare and file US (provisional, utility, continuation, divisional, national phase, design), PCT, and foreign applications, including but not limited to providing research and analysis for specifications and office action responses. In addition, I work directly with clients to prepare relevant reporting letters and formal documents. While my main role is assisting with patent protection, I also help attorneys gather evidence and perform research and analysis in dispute settlements, and manage our firm's pro-bono docket, carrying out all action items until an experienced attorney is needed. Finally, I assist with accounting and firm management while acting as an assistant to Dr. Dale Hunt. Dr. Dale Hunt is a plant scientist and a registered U.S. patent attorney with over 20 years of experience protecting plant varieties in the United States and throughout the world. As the founder of Plant & Planet Law Firm, he provides guidance and expertise on patents and IP matters, and aids clients in establishing IP protection for their legal marijuana cultivars, products, and businesses. Before he began working in the legal Cannabis industry, Dale worked with other clients in Agriculture, Water Purification, Alternative Energies, Biotechnology, and Medicine, and he helped many of his clients commercialize their IP, products and plant varieties internationally. Through Plant & Planet Law Firm he and his team continue to service these clients in addition to their Cannabis clients. Dale has degrees in botany (BS), plant genetics (MS) molecular & cellular biology (PhD), and law (JD).

Intern at Legal Resource Center
-
Sep 2018 - Jun 2019
At the LRC, attorneys educate, empower, and advise UCSB students facing legal issues. The students experience a wide variety of legal problems, and the role of the UCSB Legal Resource Center is to provide students with the tools they need to work through their issues on their own when possible. This requires explaining and breaking down legal concepts and theories so the students can understand the scope of the issue(s). Together, interns and attorneys strategize plans to address and resolve problems with each student.-Conducted intake interviews with graduate and undergraduate students before briefing practicing attorneys on legal issues. Common areas of inquiry include criminal, landlord/tenant, personal injury, employment, immigration, family law, business law, harassment, consumer debt, and general civil litigation.-Corresponded with local government and students through meetings, emails, and phone calls to uphold accurate documentation of cases.-Designed projects to increase awareness of the Legal Resource Center, e.g., custom bottle openers, tabling. -Maintained the strict confidentiality of cases to earn the trust and respect of students and faculty.
