Studied Bioengineering and prepared a thesis Masters Thesis: Environmental and Health Risk Assessment of Controlled Release Oxidation Prototypes Designed to Remediate Wastewater This work investigated the use of potassium peroxymonosulfate (Oxone) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) controlled release polymers, two chemicals for treating wastewater, to improve wastewater functionality and appearance. The oxidants could slowly diffuse from the biodegradable pellet into the water to deliver treatment, thus making them appropriate, for example, for farmers in reuse for irrigation. The research determined that acute exposures of Oxone were toxic to living organisms other than bacteria but remained clear in the wastewater. The KMnO4 resulted in discoloration in the water with a less toxic threshold to its local environment. Show less
