Bio
Nicola N.
Over the past three years Tara Johnson has consistently and continually made contributions to BCIT and its community at-large. Her involvement as a student leader began in her first year as a volunteer with one of BCIT’s largest and most successful clubs, Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE). With SIFE, she worked with a team to organize and promote the Spring Living Fair, an event that promoted sustainable businesses based in Vancouver. The following year she continued her involvement with SIFE, taking on a larger role as project manager for Fuse Gala, a student networking event that connected students with industry professionals. In addition, Tara was responsible for organizing the silent auction at Fuse, which successfully raised over $5,000 in funding for the largely self-funded student club. In her second year Tara also began work as a student councilor with the BCIT Student Association (BCITSA) as a representative for the School of Business. In her capacity as councilor she also volunteered her time on the Student Lounge Improvement Committee, which was responsible for the redesign and renovation of six student lounges across BCIT’s Burnaby campus. As someone who is always looking for new ways to improve the lives of her fellow students, Tara ran for an executive position with the Student Association in her final year at BCIT. After being elected to the position of Vice President of External Affairs, she continued her effort to improve student space on campus as a member of the Design Committee, overseeing the designs of the second and third floor renovations of the new student centre in SE2. Tara also joined forces with a student lobbying group WTF (Where’s The Funding?) which lobbied the provincial government for increased funding to post secondary institutions, the elimination of interest rates on student loans, and the reinstatement of the provincial student grants program. In addition, she organized a campus-wide men’s cancer research fundraising campaign with the Movember charity. She involved members of all five BCIT campuses and, with Movember participants from across the BCIT community, raised over $10,000. Tara exemplifies student leadership. She has consistently gone above and beyond what has been required of her in every role she takes on. In addition to balancing a full course load and strong student involvement, Tara has always taken on the role of social coordinator within her program. BCIT does not provide students with many opportunities to socialize outside of the classroom, yet over the past three years Tara managed to bring the students in her programs together through various social events throughout the semester, always mindful of making sure everyone was included. She has made an observable impact on her classmates, coworkers, and everyone she comes in contact with.
