The study included a comparison of benthic macro invertebrate colonization in cobble and concrete filled artificial baskets in Buffalo Pound Lake. Statistical analysis was completed to determine the species richness, species diversity and functional feeding group diversity. From this study, it is recognized that the use of broken concrete substrate in a water body provides the same habitat necessary for benthic macro invertebrate colonization as cobble substrate does. The Technical Assistant position included assisting in the monitoring and conservation of the Piping Plover shorebird species. Some of my responsibilities included: surveying, data collection, data entry, habitat and population inventory and analysis. To acquire this information we were required to locate nests, enclose them, monitor them and if necessary translocate them due to the potential risk of flooding. The majority of the field work took place on the shores on Lake Diefenbaker.
