My interest in Oncology as a future specialty piqued in 2021 after witnessing a growing number of friends and family members being affected by cancer, reading about patient experiences, as well as the tremendous advances in treatment options, and speaking to experts in the field. I was fortunate to be granted a job-shadowing opportunity at Groote Schuur's Radiation Oncology Department to learn more about the inner workings of the profession. • Community Service Medical Officer
      • Jan 2022 - Dec 2022

Paarl Hospital Emergency Centre | 12 months Shift Team Leader | 6 months As mandated by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) to qualify as an Independent Medical Practitioner, I completed 12 months of Community Service by working as a medical doctor in the fast-paced and high-pressure environment of Paarl Hospital's Emergency Centre. The primary functions of this role entailed stabilising critically ill patients, taking comprehensive histories, performing detailed physical examinations as well as side-room investigations, assessing and accurately diagnosing patients, prescribing evidence-based treatment, maintaining meticulous clinical records, and conducting reviews, discharges or specialist referral as appropriate. After only six months, I was promoted to leader of my shift team and took on the added responsibility of managing the unit after-hours, guiding and advising fellow colleagues, and orientating new team members that rotate through the unit - such as interns, junior doctors and registrars. • Data Collector
      • Nov 2021 - Dec 2021

I enlisted as a Data Collector for the PAIN OUT project: a large, ongoing international registry investigating the management of acute post-operative pain. The project aims to serve as a quality improvement benchmark for clinicians to guide decision-making regarding patient care with the goal to improve peri-operative patient outcomes. My role entailed visiting the post-operative inpatient wards, identifying suitable candidates that met the inclusion criteria, explaining the study objectives and data collection methodology in layman's terms, obtaining informed consent from willing participants, assisting participants with completion of the multi-language assessment tool (which collected information pertaining to demographics, clinical data and patient outcomes), and maintaining the internal data records to keep track of completed assessment tools and consent forms. The Campus License Trial at Stellenbosch University was a resounding success and consequently the first Campus License Agreement in Africa was signed. Since January 2020, undergraduate and postgraduate students at Stellenbosch University have all-inclusive access to the evidence-based content of this medical education platform that is affiliated with other leaders in the industry, such as Osmosis.
