I predominantly worked in elective/emergency surgery, however I have worked in many areas of the hospital including critical care during the pandemic. From January to March, the hospital ran a vaccination hub to distribute the vaccines to our healthcare workers as well as others from around the area, and I helped with this. I have cared for a variety of individuals, some with an array of needs including mental health disorders, cognitive impairments, learning difficulties and dementia. I work well within a team as well as individually, I use my initiative and complete any outstanding jobs/tasks to the best of my ability. I work well under pressure and remain calm throughout. My role involved me admitting patients to the unit in the morning and going through paperwork and their past medical history with them. I prepared them for surgery and helped recover them once they had their procedure. This involved me taking their vital signs, getting them refreshments, completing a blood sugar if necessary and gathering any necessary equipment they may need to take home with them. I gained many skills from my role here, including catheter care and how to change bags, how to perform an ECG, how to take a blood sugar or check a patient’s INR. I gained a lot of knowledge about different medical conditions and how to provide effective care to patients to meet their needs efficiently. I always ensured my mandatory training is up to date but I also completed several voluntary training days such as ‘care of the catheter’ and ‘dementia virtual tour’ to improve my knowledge on these topics to enable me to give better, more effective care to these patients. I also completed training on how to use the SAMBA machines at work to test samples for covid. I am passionate about caring for others and will always do my best for my patients. Ensuring their experience is a positive one is a top priority of mine. Show less
