Energy Consumers Australia is an evidenced based organisation, understanding the wants and needs of households and small business', and using this knowledge to shape the energy system. The Australian energy system is currently experiencing key transformations from carbon intensive to net zero emissions and from a centralised system to one that is largely distributed with individual and community assets (solar/batteries/EVs). Ensuring a consumer voice is central in these changes/debates is essential to ensure the transition is just and fair, that consumers who are made vulnerable by their circumstances are not left behind.

    • Zero Waste Supervisor
      • Sep 2019 - Jun 2020

Green Connect is a social enterprise that employs former refugees and young people to grow fair food and also reduce waste to landfill. My role as zero waste supervisor included leading waste management at medium-large festivals: This involved organisation and delegation of waste education, bin changing, waste sorting and litter picking. Data generated through waste sorting created a profile of what items are coming through the waste streams at various events. This not only reduces the amount of waste going to landfill, it was also be used to inform event planners of ways in which to mitigate their waste impact for greater ecological and environmental benefit.

Through an internship with Food Fairness Illawarra (FFI) I was involved in local (Illawarra based) community focussed research on topics related to fair food and food sustainabilty. Specific topics include the problems related to industrial farming/supermarket chains and overfishing/selecting fish from sustainable sources. The research generated by the internship was used to update the FFI website. It included local solutions, initiatives and additional resources community members can use as a practical tool, to get involved in the food sustainability movement.

    • Community Engagement Officer and Behaviour Change Analyst
      • Sep 2017 - Nov 2017

Through an internship with Boomerang Alliance I was involved in liaison with local business in the area (who are utilising alternatives to single use plastics) to produce in depth case studies. I also conducted personal engagement with members of the Wollongong community (survey) in order to understand knowledge, motivation and use of both single use plastic items and reusable items. This data was then analysed and used as an evidence-based insight into sustainable behaviour change and the community's susceptibility to Plastic Free Wollongong's proposed initiatives. Evidence from this project was used in a final report with a preliminary literature review on the knowledge action gap and was presented at the National ‘Beyond Plastic Pollution Conference’ in Darling Harbour (2017).
