I would not typically write a recommendation for someone I had worked with in a University setting, but Tamsin has to be an exception. We worked together in a team producing a full ISO14001 EMS manual for a client as part of our respective master's degrees, and Tamsin was by far one of the most significant contributors to the success of our project - all the while being one of the most pleasant and amicable people I've had the pleasure of working with. Her dedication to constant iteration and continual improvement was above and beyond what was expected of an individual member of the team, and this time investment was all the more impressive for being concurrent with the completion of her dissertation. Her contributions were essential to the production of a distinction-level product, which was ultimately the manual chosen by the client, and I have no doubt her work ethic and affability will make her a fantastic asset for any team lucky enough to work with her in the future.

Project Coordinator for University Recycling Scheme
-
Apr 2016 - Jun 2017
Responsible for the coordination and management of a recycling project in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collections for students at University halls of residence. Implementation of the project involved a broad set of communication and organisational skills in order to liaise with a number of professional bodies and individuals including the University’s Waste Contractor and managers of halls of residences. Due to personally implemented promotional and marketing techniques, the scheme was a success in the summer of 2016 with a large quantity of WEEE being successfully diverted from landfill to be recycled or reused. Due to this accomplishment, there is now a permanent WEEE collection at University of Southampton’s halls of residence, thereby further improving the university’s approach to sustainable waste management.

Intern in Waste & Recycling and Emergency Planning
-
Jun 2016 - Sep 2016
Gained fundamental experience in working for a local authority, after undertaking a 3-month Waste & Recycling and Emergency Planning internship with Southampton City Council (SCC). Key responsibilities within emergency planning were to collate and map flood related data to help improve the understanding of hydrology and flood risk from local sources within the city. This involved surface water mapping using GIS, historical groundwater data collation and analysis of historical flooding events in Southampton. Completed work was used by the Emergency Planning team within SCC to identify new vulnerable flood risk areas across the city, as well as contributing towards Southampton’s updated flood management plans. The waste management component of the internship provided insight into the everyday and long term challenges that the waste management sector of local authorities are faced with. Work involved liaison with a variety of other sectors within SCC to plan and carry out various project work focused on fly-tipping mitigation measures. Barriers to recycling from Southampton’s student population and major issues such as contamination were also explored. Other work included writing daily reports on customer service requests and managing waste queries from residents which involved directly contacting members of the public and writing crew instruction files. Site visits and bin audits were carried out to assess the current allocation of bins to residents in the city. This data was then digitised on GIS and directly contributed towards a series of final reports by the Council.

Internship
-
Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
I was selected for a two month internship with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG). Based in Dubai, this placement broadened my knowledge on the major environmental issues within the UAE and how EEG works to mitigate them. I was heavily involved with the planning and organisation of different projects and events, provided to members of the public, including monthly community lectures and summer recycling campaigns. Mostly office based work; I gained new administrative skills and was able to improve my proficiency on working on a computer. I constructed reports and presentations, based on data collected, one of which was put in EEG’s monthly newsletter. Furthermore, I feel I adapted well to becoming part of a mixed cultural team of staff and very much enjoyed the commitment and co-ordination of working for EEG, helping promote sustainability across the whole UAE region.
