  Manages the WIC peer counseling program on a State and local agency level. Assists in establishing program goals and objectives. Assists in establishing peer counseling program protocols and policies.Determines peer counselor staffing needs. Recruits and interviews potential peer counselors in alignment with program policies and standards. Arranges for training of peer counselors. Mentors new peer counselors during the first six months, providing routine follow-up and guidance in the early days of the job. Provides ongoing supervision and communicates monthly meetings with peer counselors. Collects documentation records and data as appropriate. Monitors the program, including conducting spot checks. Routinely reports on the program to supervisor and/or State Breastfeeding Coordinator. Works with other Breastfeeding Coordinator to assess for ongoing improvements to the program that may be needed. Attends bi-annual meeting with other Breastfeeding Coordinators which may be performed by phone or face to face.

  Responsible for the provision of nutritional care, case management and care coordinating with medical providers for the nutritionally high risk clients served by the WIC Program. Work as a team member with other care providers and WIC staff to provide timely and accurate certification. Participate in continuous process of program improvement. Mentors and trains other staff. Provides outreach in the form of community classes, presentations, and events such as teaching nutritional benefits of farmers markets and conducting prenatal and breastfeeding classes. Also, teach low-income families how to eat well on a small budget and assign food packages. Responsible for outreach programs and had the opportunity to connect with a variety of public health programs. Conduct presentations to promote community health to the clients.Mentor peer counselors, observing participant contact and providing feedback. Monitor participant contact documentation, including random quality assurance checks with participants. Monitor time sheet documentation. Provide peer counselors with orientation to the breastfeeding program and community resources. Identify work space, file drawer, phone and mailbox the peer counselor can use when working in the clinic. Ensure that peer counselors are provided the same liability coverage as other WIC staff. Establish procedures for referring participants who breastfed to the peer counselor.
