Tammie was the manager of our Professional Learning team during the beginning of my tenure as the Senior Director of Learning Research and Strategy at McGraw Hill. Tammie’s knowledge and expertise in her role was invaluable to my transition in my new role. I had so much to learn about her team, and because of her skills, organization, and thoughtfulness around her team management she made my transition so much easier. Tammie’s attention to detail allowed her team to consistently meet project deadlines, stay in budget, and provide thought leadership about new projects and ideas. She was also a great collaborator, as her team’s work required them to work with a variety of different teams on a daily basis. She was an effective and efficient manager and I was sad to lose her when she moved on to her new adventure!

Tammie hired me in 2018 to join her team as a Solution Developer at McGraw Hill. She was an encouraging, empowering leader who wasn’t afraid to push up her sleeves and dive into the work. She was compassionate and inclusive. Tammie has a keen sense of how to bring out the best in others and she uses this to manage both people and projects super successfully. I felt validated by her faith in my ability to do my job and she challenged me to solve problems in innovative ways. She had strong structural knowledge of STEM concepts and managed many diverse assets for all of the STEM related portfolios we worked on together. This provided me with a great foundation to build on as well as provided much needed context for the work I was able to complete. Delegating and providing support through context is a difficult skill for some managers, but Tammie balanced it beautifully. It was an honor to learn from her and to gain insights for increasing representation in the STEM field which we are both particularly passionate about. I would work for her again in a heartbeat!

This role allowed me to go back to my chemistry roots for a few years. I managed the department inventory of chemicals and supplies and prepared all reagents for general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry classes. I also had the pleasure of working with a team of student staff in the practical application of chemistry concepts including calculations and hands-on preparations.
