My PhD draws upon elements from environmental science, health, psychology and community development to holistically explore the strategies for reviving and strengthening Indigenous cultures, knowledges, and practices for sustainable disaster risk reduction, health, well-being and development. Together with other six Indigenous and three non-Indigenous team-members from five different institutions in Australia and Pakistan, I conducted research in partnerships with two remote Indigenous communities of the NT (Elcho Island) and Pakistan. My PhD directly responds to the recent calls of International forums including United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Paris Agreement 2015, United Nation Office of Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) (2017) Sendai Framework of Action 2015-2030, to research with Indigenous peoples to strengthen Indigenous resilience and adaptive capacities that can be applied to reducing the risk from and increasing adaptation to social and natural vulnerabilities for sustainable development. The outcomes from my research offer holistic strategies for integrating health, risk reduction, and community development in ways that facilitate creating together with Indigenous communities sustainable ways for drawing upon cultural capacities to addressing the underlying reasons of social and natural disasters that affect the quality of life, resilience, health, and wellbeing in Australia, Pakistan and worldwide. Moreover, it is also envisaged that my Indigenous development research being cross-cultural, and transnational is novel, pioneer, and groundbreaking that advances the agenda of the United Nations for developing local, national, regional, and international platforms for mutual exchange and learning in Australia, Pakistan, and worldwide. Undertaking research with community0managerd mental health organisations in the Northern Territory, Australia, and their clients to explore the funding issues and their impact on service delivery. Government funding for mental health community-managed organizations across Australia and particularly in the Northern Territory has been criticised for being insufficient to meet requirements that impact the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery to their clients, and especially to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. In particular, contractual funding and accountability requirements have been criticised for causing mission drift and loss of autonomy by the community-managed mental health organisations. This study reveals useful qualitative data about the experience of a community-managed mental health organisations and their clients in the NT that need to be taken into consideration in policy and practice.
