The cell wall membrane is of great importance to maintain the viability (eg. antibiotic resistant, osmotic shock, etc.) and the shape of bacteria. We know that the peptidoglycan layer is arranged with crosslinks, which have been studied mostly using genetic procedures. By using metabolic labeling, in combination with biorthogonal chemical detection, we are attempting to induce synthetic crosslinks to study the formation of the peptidoglycan layer.
