I teach a course, 'How To Be A Good Prescriber' to first year medical students. This course is an introduction to principles of rational medicine use. Course focuses on issues that affect drug prescribing and use, including sources and evaluation of drug information; issues surrounding drug development/regulation and the FDA; drug promotion; adverse drug reactions; medication errors; drug quality; drug pricing; patient counseling, education, and compliance; drug prescribing for special populations (e.g., children, pregnant women, elderly); herbal preparations; informed consent and ethical issues in drug development. This selective is perhaps the only such offering in the nation in a medical school with a great deal of focus on drug development, regulation and the role of the FDA. Show less

Safety Reviewer/Medical Epidemiologist

1998 - 2013
Consultant to the review divisions of the CDER and reviewed safety data (spontaneous reports; observational studies; clinical trials; etc.) in the pre- and the postmarketing phase of drug development and helped the Agency make informed decisions regarding drug approval, benefit-risk assessment, and risk management plans. My experience and writing skills have allowed me to review and analyze data from a wide and complex range of sources and produce clear scientific reviews/reports that have assessed the safety and effectiveness of several FDA regulated therapeutic products. I have synthesized the recommendations from my reviews into plain language that has shaped the final labeling of the products and used for the Agency's Drug safety communications. At the FDA, I have been a scientific lead and/or led several projects involving collaboration with various disciplines within and outside the Agency. Show less
