I had the pleasure of managing Spencer in the North American CAE Applications group at BorgWarner Turbo Systems from January - June, 2019. On a personal level, he interacted easily with people across all functional groups, and he befriended all with whom he interacted. He was always dependable and punctual. On a technical level, I found Spencer to be well above average for a nascent analyst. Early on, with little instruction or oversight, he competently and efficiently conducted all simulations and analyses assigned to him (some of which were advanced and non-routine for our group). He was very effective at communicating his results in written and spoken forms, and he has a knack for "demystifying" complicated subjects and findings. In conducting his day-to-day work in ANSYS, he identified several tasks for which he created various optimizations and automations that benefitted all analysts. He has a rare talent for creating technical, programming-related solutions for improving overall simulation efficiency and accuracy. His skills extend well beyond being a mere user of ANSYS. Spencer also has a passion for teaching and seeing others grow. He was routinely consulted by other more-experienced analysts for his insight into setting up simulations, or running scripts that he had created. He conducted routine, formal training sessions on Python, IronPython, mesh optimization, interrupt controls, monitor points, HPC monitoring, etc., all to more experienced and senior analysts. Spencer is a tour de force. Any employer will be very fortunate to bring him into their fold. He is a force multiplier, a difference maker, and an excellent teammate. He has my highest recommendation.

I had the privilege of working with Spencer on two occasions at BorgWarner. In both instances Spencer showed himself to be a hard-working and dedicated employee, conscientiously working towards team goals and objectives. I have further observed that Spencer's technical aptitude is matched by his soft skills - he has a knack for presenting sometimes tedious, sometimes difficult technical material in a very easy-to-understand conversational manner. He also exhibits an ability to move well between different groups and gets along readily with this colleagues. Highly recommended.

As an Engineering intern at Glanbia, I did quite a bit of work with their refrigeration systems in three of their plants. I updated documentation including instruments and controls on P&ID's. I tracked the chilled water system and troubleshooted it. I worked on putting in a new heat treat system, calculating appropriate line sizes as well as sizing pumps for proper functionality with a VFD. I worked as a research assistant for Dr. Aaron Katz. He specialized in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), particularly having to do with creating meshes that will get more accurate results with fewer nodes. This is through strand nodes instead of a Cartesian grid of nodes. I updated and produced documentation for the massive amounts of code that had already been written. I also worked on smaller projects aimed at helping me to understand the functionality of the larger more complicated code. I helped to create a website for him to show the research being accomplished in his lab. Show less
