      I opened this restaurant with my twin brother following a year in East Africa as an HIV prevention educator. I had no previous restaurant experience, and very little management experience, but I was determined and focused. Coming back from Malawi with extensive teaching, public speaking, and team leading experience in diverse settings positioned me well. Following the franchise model our business turned a profit from year one.It was here that I gained a thorough understanding of and true appreciation for customer service and its vital role in distinguishing a business from competitors. It laid the foundation for my understanding of the paramount importance of customer experience and what it means for the viability of any business.I also learned new things about myself. Having no previous kitchen management experience I successfully changed long established franchise-wide standards for sandwich preparation with methods I personally developed and I repeatedly helped the franchise owner in opening new locations. Between staffing my restaurant and these experiences lies the foundation of my talent acquisition and development abilities.
