I was heavily involved in the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project throughout the duration of the project, up to April 2020. This is the first project of it's kind in the UK and being based in Cornwall where I am from it was a fantastic opportunity to be involved in something so exciting. My role was very varied but consisted mainly of communicating the project through graphics, info-graphics and online via the project website and social media. As well as creating visual resources for the project team to use, I also created and hosted many outreach activities/sessions. Myself and my colleague created from scratch an outreach programme that was delivered to schools around the project site and all across Cornwall, the sessions were targeted at the specific age group and consisted of interactive activities, presentations and animations/films. For the primary school aged children we created a character called Miss Molecule (a water molecule) who taught children about the geothermal system at United Downs, the difference between renewable and non-renewable energies and also included some climate change messaging. The secondary school programme was based around Raspberry Shakes (seismographs) that were installed as part of the project, we hosted a hub to the closest secondary schools to teach them about local and international seismicity. There were also many public outreach events that I was involved in to promote the project, from local events such as the Stithians Show, to online events hosted by the University of Plymouth. This role gave me many different opportunities, and I look forward to seeing the power plant up and running creating zero carbon electricity. Show less
