Jul 2013 - Feb 2019
As a senior producer for National Prison Radio as well as producing radio, I worked closely with female prisoners, training them to present and produce programmes. The role involved line managing, mentoring and conducting interviews with women who often had multiple disadvantages and barriers to overcome and working within a unique and challenging environment. • Recruiting, training and mentoring female prisoners to create, present and edit award-winning radio shows within the challenging prison environment. • Developing creative, powerful and entertaining speech and music radio to inspire and impact our audience of 80,000 prisoners across England and Wales, who the mainstream media struggles to engage. • Conducting interviews on difficult subjects in an empathetic and sensitive manner for example on drug addiction, living with HIV and growing up in care. • Working to strict editorial guidelines set by the Ministry of Justice. • Developing campaigns and content around learning to read and write in prison, and getting jobs when prisoners are released.
