The institute uses digital arts as an avenue to enhance teaching and learning. We focus on filmmaking and podcasting, either facilitating or helping teachers facilitate short, subject-related media pieces that motivate students and deepen learning. We prioritize projects that enhance civic engagement in educational settings. We partner with universities, school districts, juvenile justice services, school principals and teachers This process of learning these media literacy skills is media education, and our institute serves as a media literacy resource. I helped establish and ran the Utah Film Center Education Department for 4 years. We introduced students and teachers to the power of film as a teaching resource and improve students’ media literacy through film screenings, discussions, workshops, and classroom lessons with the goal of increasing student engagement, comprehension, and critical thinking while supporting core curriculum requirements. I designed programs, wrote and published standards-linked media arts curriculum, taught workshops and facilitated media arts-centered experiences both locally and nationally. I co-authored the Film Spark curriculum that consists of volumes of documentaries accompanied by standards-linked study guides as well as the 5-unit SHIFT filmmaking curriculum manual that we provided to teachers (science, english, social studies, etc... ) who participated in our filmmaking workshops and guides them through the technical and pedagogical process of integrating filmmaking into their classrooms. My mission is to support teachers, and ultimately students through bringing media literacy building programming to schools and training teachers to integrate digital storytelling into content instruction as a contemporary tool to inspire, create and learn. I designed my own curriculum and taught both French and Humanities at the college. In both subjects, I integrated arts into my content instruction, and found it not only increased attendance and motivation, but also reading comprehension and critical thinking.
