Mermaids is now an award winning and professional organisation with over 40 staff and income of circa £2m per annum. My public engagement as spokesperson has spanned over 15 years, with high profile media appearances on channels such as Sky, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4. When I started as CEO in 2016 there was a helpline and email service only, dealing with less than 3,000 contacts per annum and a yearly residential for families. Work done has added multiple new avenues of support, putting in place systems and staff to create professional and effective services. In 2013/14 calls and emails were just under 500 per annum, 2021/22 we have exceeded 45,000 contacts for the year across helpline, email, webchat, local groups, residential weekends, digital groups, events participation, online forums and advocacy and support systems • Added services for local and national support with local groups and events engaging with thousands of families and young people • Introduced training and education resources for organisations and individuals involved in the care and support of trans young people, and oversaw the introduction of CPD accreditation for the same • Added the legal support service in 2018 • Added policy department to focus on stakeholder and parliamentary engagement • Worked with stakeholders and partners to ensure collaboration across the LGBTQ+ sector; over the last few years this has been a particular challenge as hostility towards LGBTQ+ people is growing globally. In the UK, attacks aimed at trans women and trans youth has been particularly focussed and well-funded, including the Bell vs Tavistock case in December 2020

Transgender healthcare is a rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field. In the last decade, there has been an increase in the number and visibility of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people seeking support and gender-affirming medical treatment in parallel with a significant increase in cultural and social acceptance for TGD people. The World Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is an international, multidisciplinary, professional association whose mission is to promote evidence-based care, education, research, public policy, and respect in transgender health. One of the primary functions of WPATH is to promote the highest standards of health care for transgender and gender diverse people through the Standards of Care (SOC). The SOC was initially developed in 1979 and the last version (SOC-7) was published in 2012. The Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People, Version 8 (SOC-8) are evidence-based standards for safe and effective gender-affirming health care and represent the most expert, in-depth, and evidence-based and consensus-based guidelines internationally. All people have a right to bodily autonomy and self-determination and deserve compassionate health care that uses the latest science and most up-to-date medical treatments to appropriately meet their individual needs—and that’s as true for transgender people as anyone else. To support this right to health care, WPATH maintains a comprehensive set of expert standards of care to help health care providers support and serve TGD patients. These standards provide expert clinical guidance for healthcare professionals working with TGD patients to develop individualized, age-appropriate care plans to improve health and overall well-being. This assistance may include gynecologic and urologic care, reproductive health, voice and communication therapy, mental health services (e.g., counseling, psychotherapy), and/or hormonal or surgical treatments, among others.
