Susan is up for every challenge. She first came to Pacific Ridge School (PRS) as a substitute teacher and was new to the profession. At that time she taught Economics in the Upper School, then she moved into Seventh-Grade History, then she worked with the Middle School Skills Program, then she started teaching in the Upper School again and became a grade-level Dean, and now she is our Director of Community and Inclusion. It is important to summarize these different position because one of Susan's greatest traits, and certainly one that has served her well and the school well, is her adaptability. Susan can and does do many things well. She embraces and exudes a "growth mindset," and she is always seeking to improve. Because of her background in law and economics and her wide array of skills, Susan is also well equipped to help others. The best example of which has to do with an impasse we were experiencing with our meetings. As the school grew, the need for meetings increased, and within a few years we seemed to be mired in unproductive, tiresome meetings. Susan recognized this impasse and recommended The Art of Coaching Teams by Elena Aguilar. This text and the trainings all of our administrators received from brightmorning, Aguilar's company, were transformative. Today Aguilar's team-based approach to meetings is our standard, and now our meetings are more productive, inclusive, equitable, and fun. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that I would always want Susan on my team. She is a leader, a thinker, a doer, and a collaborator. She's the best.

Susan's passion for, dedication to, and knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion are unparalleled. She has led this work at PRS with courage, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to ensuring that all students, faculty, and staff have ample opportunities to engage in DEI across a variety of sectors. She regularly presents to faculty and staff as part of PRS's ongoing professional development efforts, and her presentations and activities always engage and challenge us, leaving us with a clear sense of how we can incorporate DEI into our work and relationships with students. Her calm demeanor invites us to partner with her in this essential work, and she has ignited a sense of passion and urgency around DEI at PRS.

    • Director of Community and Inclusion

Upon my appointment as Director of Community and Inclusion, I was charged with architecting all aspects of the DEI Action Plan, including: increase diversity/retention; review/revise curriculum; assess pedagogy in relation to DEI/curriculum; fund DEI initiatives; improve Advisory programs to foster belonging; document instances of bigotry and prejudice. By collaborating with the Board of Trustees, admin, and parents, I devised and deployed solutions and led the collaborative school-wide mission to develop and implement sustainable diversity, equity, and inclusion culture and reputation. 🔹 Advanced Strategic Plan for DEI vision/goals by spearheading creation of school’s first-ever Core Values ⎯ leading team to brainstorm, conducting empathy interviews, and wordsmith to produce conversation-friendly Core Values.🔹 Reversed depleted sense of student belonging (32% v. 64% standard) by leading two teams of 5 members each in root cause analysis to define underlying problem and collaboratively determine cost-effective solution.🔹 Instituted and facilitated anonymous reporting & documentation process (est. 2019) for instances of bigotry/prejudice.🔹 Manage $104K budget by forecasting and budgeting travel/event/supply needs for student groups, faculty PD, and Opportunity Grant Program funding.🔹Championed exponential growth of student alliance groups (from 2 to 14 in 12 years; directly responsible for creation/facilitation of 10); continue to lead Student Equity Advisory leadership group.🔹Raised profile of school in larger community by helping establish Regional Student Diversity Summit in 2021 with 4 sister schools, collaborating with faculty/students to present to 200+ attendees annually, in region that previously lacked DEIB programming. All the while, I supported the then-Director of Community and Inclusion with school-wide DEIB initiatives and made an impact in the greater school community in these ways:🔹Transformed meeting culture across all levels of school—before ever holding first meeting—by using continuous improvement to lead admin team in defining the problem (ineffective meetings) and developing solutions to promote equal participation/engagement.🔹Nurtured connections with students and parents by serving as Grade Level Dean and Service Learning Advisor to 10th-grade students involved in social justice, equity service, and outreach programs.
