  As a longtime bilingual teacher in the inner city of Chicago, Illinois, I used my bilingual skills to educate elementary children of the primarily Hispanic population. I was privileged to integrate the arts in all its forms with my teaching thus creating well-rounded students who also learned to love the arts such as drawing, painting,creative writing, classical music, drama and more. My job was to teach all the skills of the grade level in both English and Spanish and to maintain Hispanic culture and introduce the American culture which was new to my students. It was very important for me to get the students the right foundation necessary to have them grow up to be productive, participating members of American society and not lose their cultural identity.
