I am currently co-PI/PD of the Purdue Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) for Translational Biomedical Sciences, which is supported by an $1.5 million R25 from NIH NIGMS. The goal of the Purdue PREP is to enhance the cognitive diversity of the biomedical workforce by increasing the number of college graduates from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the biomedical sciences that successfully enter and complete a Ph.D., D.V.M- Ph.D., or M.D.-Ph.D. in translational biomedical sciences. Over the course of the one-year program, PREP Scholars have the opportunity to enhance their skill set in four main areas: research aptitude; academics; professional development and career planning; and community and resiliency. As Director of the Purdue PREP, I am responsible for coordinating recruitment; overall programmatic design and implementation methods; mentoring, assessment, and evaluation; budgeting and preparing annual reports. I serve as a liasion between the Purdue Graduate School and the three graduate programs (BMS, CPB, VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine, which are eachmanaged at the department level. One area of focus on this position has been to enhance the recruitment of graduate students with backgrounds that have been traditionally under-represented in the biomedical and biomedical-related fields.

The Purdue University SROP is supported by the Graduate School and has the goal of increasing diversity in academic, government, and industry positions that require graduate degrees. Undergraduate students from social and economic backgrounds that are underrepresented in research careers are provided with an 8-week opportunity to obtain hands-on mentored research experience as well as career and professional guidance to enhance their entry and timely progression through graduate and professional school. As co-Director of the SROP, I was directly responsible for the program design and implementation necessary to provide undergraduates with diverse backgrounds with professional development and career planning support. I also supported faculty in their mentoring of undergraduates in the SROP. Show less

I initiated and developed the proposal to integrate cost-effective handheld ultrasounds in anatomy courses in the preclinical veternary and veterinary nursing curricula to enhance DVM and veterinary nursing students’ three-dimensional knowledge of anatomy and the topographic relationships between organs. This proposal was successfully funded through the Instructional Equipment Program from the Purdue Office of the Provost. The use of small portable handheld ultrasound (US) units that can plug directly into an Android or Apple device in preclinical courses (anatomy, physiology, veterinary skills and competencies) provides an innovative approach to fostering discovery learning that engages students with diverse learning styles through the use of technology relevant to their chosen profession. I am currently co-leading a team of faculty and staff to develop an implementation plan for Fall 2022. Show less
