Saint Louis Story Stitchers Artists Collective received 501c3 on December 24, 2014. We now have a board and a mission. I serve as president. We erase real and perceived divisions through cultural exploration and arts practice — by stitching together our city. The vision of the Saint Louis Story Stitchers is that all teens in Saint Louis will be engaged in the city’s diverse artistic community. The purpose is to document St. Louis through art and word to promote understanding, civic pride, intergenerational relationships, and literacy. A social enterprise based on publishing supports our mission. Collective members create and sell original videos, performances, and publications focused on the stories of the people of St. Louis. ASAFO! Flying King’s Colors, a study of African Asafo flags and the writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spent 6 weeks as an Artist-in-Residence with Art Teacher Nancy Elliot at Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School, in fall of 1999. Project included an exhibition of student artwork produced in residency together with my own visual investigations of the flags and writings of Dr. King at Lyndon House Arts Center, Athens, Georgia. Opening reception was centerpiece for the MLK Day community celebrations, January 17th. Exhibition also included 20 authentic Asafo flags from Ghana, West Africa, which I curated and borrowed from the Noel Collection of African Art at the Tubman Museum of African-American Art in Macon, Georgia. UGA Visiting Artist Dr. Paschal Yao Younge also choreographed flags into an original dance piece. Student artists, as well as 1,000 other Clarke County Middle School students saw the dance during the School Group Performance at Hodgson Hall on the UGA campus. The flags were used by Dr. Younge and his ensemble once more at UGA, as well as at the World Music Concert, West Virginia University, Morgantown in April 2000. They are permanently installed in the cafeteria of Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School. Funded in part by R.E.M./ Athens, LLC through a grant to Clarke County School District. Co-sponsored by the Lyndon House Arts Center, the Fabric Design Area of the Lamar Dodd School of Art and the Office of Performing Arts, University of Georgia. Written by Susan Colangelo and Co-signed by Dr. Jimmy Morris, then head of the Fine Arts Division, Clarke County School District Show less
