Susan was an extremely well regarded member of the MIMS editorial team. She would use her initiative to come up with suggestions of how we could improve process and was not afraid to get involved in new projects. In her role she was extremely well organised and diligent, as well as being genuinely interested in developing her skills and knowledge.

Subject matter expert with acute knowledge of medication management: • Prescriber workflow – order sets, order sentences, PRN/STAT ordering, tapered/cyclical dosing • Pharmacist workflow – dispensing, medication reconciliation, stock, formulary management • Nurse medication administration workflow – injections, infusions, PCAs, patches, inhalations; barcode drug administration • Clinical decision support (drug-drug interactions, therapeutic duplication, allergies), drug database uploads (MIMS Australia, Thailand, China), calculations (concentration, flow rate) My biggest achievement so far has been the design work I have led to enhance PBS prescribing functionality and its contribution to customising discharge and outpatient workflow within TrakCare to meet the needs of the Australian hospital setting. I’m a keen advocate for AGILE software development methodology and a strong believer of working together with stakeholders to develop a software solution that is tailored for end-users. My aim is to deliver realistic project outcomes while balancing customer expectations, technical restraints and resource availability. Show less

Development: My main responsibility at Meditech was to provide clinical leadership in the adaptation of Meditech’s electronic medication management system and pharmacy application to the Australian hospital setting. Using my clinical knowledge as a pharmacist and my technical understanding of databases, I provided specialist advice on the integration of MIMS data – an achievement accomplished through the compilation of project plans, provision of functional specifications and performance of regression testing. I compiled strategic development plans for the integration of PBS data and was a strong advocate for the incorporation of AMT mapping. My role was to be a problem solver – to pinpoint issues before they become problems, to assess the clinical implications of technical restraints, and to find resolutions that form the balancing point between clinical requirements and technical capabilities, while meeting the demands of current industry trends. Implementation: I was responsible for implementation of the PAS application for patient registration, which involved: • Product demonstrations for new pieces of development • Discussion of client expectations and achievable goals within scoping workshops • System configuration and set-up in preparation for training and implementation • Compilation of training material and delivery of training-the-trainer training • Set-up of patent registration screens layout in discussion with client project team • Compilation for functional specifications for modification requests Support: Provision of technical support across various applications, including pharmacy, patient registration and health information management (i.e. master patient index) My appreciation for and understanding of clinical information systems (CIS) and patient administration systems (PAS) was strongly reinforced through my multi-faceted range of responsibilities at Meditech. As design lead for the enhancement of Mountaintop Dispense, my main responsibility was to re-design the graphical user interface of the dispense system and to provide guidance for the programming team in the form of design specifications. This role entailed critical analysis of the dispensing workflow within the community pharmacy setting to redesign Mountaintop Dispense in such a way that will provide users with a sense of familiarity with core dispensing functions while introducing new features at the same time. An essential outcome of this project was to refresh the Mountaintop Dispense design with a modern 'look and feel'. This involved use of a multi-layered representation of sequential dispensing stages to create mock-up screenshots to ensure design requirements were conveyed to programmers in a clear and concise way. Another project which I was involved in was the compilation of functional specifications for support tools proposed for inclusion within Mountaintop Dispense. This role drew strongly upon my clinical experience (to help programmers understand the dispensing workflow in community pharmacy) and technical skills (to ensure integration of new components would have minimal impact on the existing database architecture). Involvement in these projects has reinforced my passion for technological innovation and made me realise that concise articulation of complex clinical concepts is something I truly enjoy when communicating in a non-clinical environment. Reviewing vendor software: My role was to review vendor software from a clinical perspective to ensure MIMS data had been correctly integrated. This role gave me much exposure to various clinical software applications, as well as solid insight into some of the challenges encountered in the integration process. I also took proactive steps to give more structure to the review process through the development of standard operating procedures, rigorous testing plans and structured feedback reports. Working with clients to achieve desired outcomes was something I took great pride in. Contribution to development of eMIMSCloud, iMIMS and MIMS for Android: My involvement in these major projects gave me a comprehensive understanding of the software development process. For the eMIMSCloud project, I took a leading role in designing the product image search, which involved conceptualising ideas, designing mock-up screenshots, providing guidance on data mapping, making recommendations on functionality and style, creating data integrity testing plans, as well as user-based testing. Through these responsibilities, I gained insight into the importance of project management and strategic planning to ensure targets are met. Management of product image database: I was responsible for the management of all editorial aspects relating to the product image database. My intricate understanding of the database structure enabled me to advise on more efficient data extraction methods to produce more meaningful internal integrity reports, as well as more useful image checklists to send to pharmaceutical companies. My skills in time management, organisation and prioritisation were strengthened through tight deadlines associated with annual print publications. Maintenance of content in the MIMS database: In addition to standard editorial processes, I recommended many ways in which editorial workflow could be more streamlined because efficient workflow is an aspect which I highly value. The Medicine Box is the first website in Australia developed specifically to assist intern pharmacists in their preparation for registration exams. As project lead, I was responsible for managing all aspects of the project including development and maintenance of the website. The Medicine Box has gained immense popularity over the years, amassing over 6500 members and sponsorship from some of the most respected organisations in the profession. The success of the website is a showcase of my strengths in project management and strategic planning. Throughout the project, I demonstrated strong qualities in leadership, time management and problem solving to ensure project targets were sufficiently met. A vast array of study material (including topic summaries, revision questions and practice exam questions with suggested answers) is available on the website. Preparation of these resources enabled me to exhibit my strengths in articulating complex clinical concepts in a simple and concise way. Management of the editorial workflow gave me insight into the importance of maintaining content that is accurate, concise and up-to-date, as well as some of the challenges encountered in publication management. My technical skills in php, HTML, CSS and JavaScript were enhanced through my involvement in maintenance of the website. I was also exposed to MySQL through maintenance of the subscription database. Extending upon this knowledge, I later built a forum for the website using phpBB. Effective marketing and business management was essential to the success of the website. Besides email campaigns and print advertising, we embraced social media and search engine optimisation to strengthen our online presence. The Medicine Box highlights my passion for pharmacy, writing and technology. It is a showcase of my determination and persistence, and my yearning for technological innovation within the healthcare sector. For more details, please visit www.openthemedicinebox.com. Show less

As a consultant pharmacist, my role is to provide comprehensive patient care through conducting home medicines reviews and liaising with doctors to optimise patient medication management so that improvements in overall health outcomes can be achieved. From a business perspective, I am also actively involved in discussions with pharmacies about the implementation of business strategies to improve HMR service provision and how these processes can be streamlined into pharmacist workflow.
