I founded Amrit Foundation of India to address the marginalization of persons with intellectual and developmental challenges. At Amrit, we believe that disability is not simply a health problem. Disability marginalizespeople by putting restrictions in the way of persons with disability, making it hard for them to fit into society. The ‘degree of fit’ that people with disability can achieve affects not only the physical, but also the social and emotional life of the individual. Our world is made up of the landscape of our social relationships. Our relationships determine our emotional lives, the resources that we have, and the opportunities that we can leverage. And while the Indian government seemingly has programs that address this subject, funds allocation and actual benefits to persons with these challenges remains inadequate. The organization works through a variety of tools to create inclusive spaces, catalyze access to information, and curate and create knowledge. Some of its programs are: #weallfitin youth programs, Baby Milestones and Red Flag Trackers, Excluded from Life consultations, Services Bank, Amritshala information for caregivers, and Skills training.
