I prepared a presentation that I delivered to the entire legal team covering: NDAs, Power of Attorney, Contract Reviews, and Supply of Goods Agreements and how these operate at Lush Legal - to be used for internal communication within the company. Although my research largely centred around these four areas, I gained an incredible insight into the entirety of Lush's legal operation. In particular the exposure to the cross-jurisdictional element was absolutely fascinating. The ability to communicate with other teams such as IP, and to meet the Lush directors during my programme was exciting and an amazing opportunity to develop the soft skills crucial to working in a legal environment.

Work Experience Placement

Aug 2022 - Sep 2022
Following an application process, I was selected to participate in KN's work experience programme 2022. It was a fantastic opportunity to experience the firm's culture first-hand, and to gain an exposure to diverse practice areas. During the programme I sat in four seats: Corporate and Commercial, Real Estate, Family and Criminal Litigation. I was given the opportunity to conduct research tasks for an ongoing family law case, sit in client meetings, and meet firm members at every stage of their careers including paralegals, trainees, associates, partners and managing partners. I was also able to complete tasks including drafting, contract reviews, and client correspondence.

The Legal Apprentice in partnership with Kingsley Napley LLP and The Times Newspaper
-
Dec 2018 - Jun 2019
I successfully competed in, with my team placing second out of 902 teams, in The Legal Apprentice 2019 in partnership with Kingsley Napley LLP and The Times Newspaper. As a result, I was featured in the legal section of The Times (27/06/2019). During the final at News UK HQ, I analysed documents, discerning arising liability and legal issues and identified these live in front of a panel of judges including: Stephen Parkinson (Senior Partner at Kingsley Napley), Judith Seddon (Partner at Ropes and Gray LLP), Cordella Bart Stewart (Director of the Black Solicitors Network), Frances Gibb (former Legal Editor of the Times) and Colin Passmore (Senior Partner at Simmons and Simmons LLP). Further, I made a successful live bail application on behalf of my client and conducted a live client interview, and also an interview at the police station. I assumed the role of a solicitor, advising my client, representing this client in a police interview and then making a bail application on my client’s behalf. This allowed me to enhance my analytical skills as I had to assess the situation quickly whilst formulating a suitable response to the police officer’s questions, and subsequent disclosure (to my client in the interview). Within this scenario I particularly enjoyed exploring the law; sifting through complex legal rules in order to reach a workable, and the most effective, solution for my client. The final enabled me to gain first-hand experience of what it means to be a solicitor, enlightening me about the multifaceted nature of law as I had to consider not only the legal implications for my client but also her personal circumstances.

I stepped into the shoes of a Barrister, participating in a live murder trial where I had the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses and thus put the law into practice. The programme enabled me to improve my skills of public speaking, commercial awareness, teamwork and problem-solving. I analysed and discussed a variety of cases including familial disputes and company mergers. I was particularly intrigued by a case involving Children Act proceedings because of the complex considerations of the upbringing of the child and its evident relation to the outcome of the case. Exploring this led me to contemplate how a subtle difference in circumstance can utterly impact a case, demonstrating the subjective nature of law in its application.
