I mentored Subhashree as a PhD student in Dr. Girish Ratnaparkhi's lab at IISER Pune where she chose to rotate during the spring semester of her BS-MS course in 2019. She was a friendly eager-eyed mentee with the markings of a good researcher. Her project involved the study of protein aggregation in the Drosophila larval brain. With determination and hard work, she was successful in learning intricate Drosophila biology techniques and confocal microscopy in a short time. She was able to execute month-long experiments all the way from set up to finished results with elegance. Subhashree possesses a strong grasp on concepts and a sharp sense of logic, and can achieve any goal she puts her mind to. Overall, I had a great time getting to know her both personally and professionally.

I am a graduate research scholar at IISER Pune, and spent about a year and a half between December 2019 and June 2021 mentoring Subhashree through several research projects at the Population Biology Lab. Two of these projects involved experimental work lab populations of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster while the third consisted of a critical literature review within our research field-dispersal evolution. Fly work generally tends to be labour-intensive, but Subhashree very soon proved to be a capable and tenacious researcher. She picked up the skills required for regular maintenance as well as more specialised techniques that are needed to run experiments, and soon became part of the permanent working group that ran the general upkeep of the lab-a position of trust and responsibility. Fly work is also collaborative by nature and Subhashree's easygoing personality made her a great labmate to work with. In the time that I have mentored her, I have always found Subhashree open to critical feedback and eager to improve, be it about experimental work or scientific writing. She shows an intuitive grasp for scientific writing in particular and needed remarkably little help with writing up reports of her semester projects-a quality that makes her stand out over many of her batchmates at a similar stage. In 2020, when all the experiments planned for her Master's work had to be abandoned due to the pandemic, she switched gears completely to work on a literature review instead. This was a daunting prospect at the best of times as the dispersal evolution literature is vast and diverse, and it is a mark of Subhashree's work ethic and sheer perseverance that she carried the review successfully to completion. Throughout her final year of working on this review, she was faced with immense odds-working remotely in difficult conditions meant she was deprived of a supportive lab environment. But the poise with which she handled a difficult and unexpected situation, and the adaptability she showed in changing her research project, exceeded all reasonable expectations from a Master's student. It has been a delight mentoring and working with Subhashree. She is a phenomenal person and I have no doubt that she would be a valuable asset to any organisation she joins.
