By heating the used oil in a modified microwave oven in the presence of particulate carbon, hydrocarbons of smaller molecular size than those present in the waste oil are generated and these have potential for use as a gaseous or liquid fuel. Hence an environmentally unfriendly waste material can be transformed into a useful resource and serves as an alternative source of hydrocarbon energy. The project involves the determination of the chemical composition of the products produced under various operating conditions, together with an assessment of the production any toxic compounds that might reduce the commercial value of the oil. Possible chemical reaction mechanisms that account for the observed products will be determined. Show more Show less
