By specialising in private client taxation, I have built up considerable experience and expertise in this field with an emphasis on agreeing complex financial and taxation issues, and helping clients achieve their financial objectives. Over three decades of experience enables me to provide a unique insight into the circumstances of individuals and families and the objectives they seek to achieve as they grow their wealth and in time seek to pass it on to their heirs and successors. The main part of my work is helping private clients and entrepreneurs. I am also experienced in working with UK resident foreign domiciliaries and in handling tax disputes and investigations. In addition, I act as a professional trustee for a number of families. Some of my clients are high net worth individuals and ultra high net worth individuals. Clients range from individuals with relatively simple financial and taxation affairs, where I give practical and straightforward advice, to those individuals with high net worth or ultra high net worth, where my advice spans not only their personal interests but also the structures set up to hold wealth for their families and their business interests. I lead a great team at Ritchie Phillips as we provide our clients with effective representation in their financial and taxation affairs, with the insight that comes from decades of experience. I think it is important to keep ahead of the curve. Not just in terms of my tax knowledge of legislature, case law and the technical aspects of the role but also in keeping aware of new ways of working, such as LinkedIn, new approaches and the latest thinking to keep my business at the forefront of professional tax advice. I qualified as chartered accountant and chartered tax advisor with Rawlinson and Hunter. In my first three years, I gained a wide breadth of experience of entrepreneurial businesses working in the audit and accounts department before moving to the tax department. The business sectors I gained experience in were wide ranging and included: • property investors • property developers • leisure businesses • golf courses owners • motor racing circuits • marinas and yachting • professional services firms • management consultants • solicitors and barristers • architects • chartered surveyors • estate agents • farmers • horse racing studs • retailers • international traders • import / export businesses • freight forwarders • private members clubs • livery companies • charitable trusts and companies In the tax department, I looked after a significant portfolio of private clients and businesses gaining great experience in the preparation of tax returns and the intricacies of income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax for private clients and corporation tax and value added tax for businesses. At this time, I gained an in-depth understanding of the law of domicile and the remittance basis of taxation for UK resident foreign domiciliaries. This experience was equivalent to working in the private client departments of Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG and Ernst & Young. Show less
